Classroom News: Friday, October 20

We had a long, busy day in kindergarten today!

Today in a Nutshell
We worked at Centers this morning.  I finished re-assessing students on letter recognition and letter sounds.  The kids worked on counting with play-doh, read 2 Let's Find Out magazines, practiced writing letters correctly in our Handwriting Without Tears notebooks, and worked in math journals.

After our morning recess, we reviewed our Orton-Gillingham letter cards.  If you do not have a set of these, and would like a set, please email me and let me know.  I would be happy to send a set home to you.  We looked at the sight words we have learned (the, to, a do, no, I, go, so, he, me, she, we, be, of, was, too).  I was happy that most kids seemed to remember them!  We also read Five Little Ghosts Playing Tricks at School.  I asked if we really have ghosts at school, and the kids happily knew that we do not.  I connected this story back to the rhyme Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed since both books followed that pattern.

After lunch, we worked in our calendar notebooks, then read Huggly's Halloween by Tedd Arnold.  Huggly is a very silly monster and I think the children enjoy hearing about his adventures.  We created a Bubble Map describing Huggly.  This was difficult because the children wanted to include feelings and activities.  A Bubble Map focuses on describing a person or an object.  Take a look at the Bubble Map in the picture at the bottom of the page.

We went to the computer lab for our specials class and returned to the class for free time before collecting our things to head home.

Trick or Treat Festival
Legacy's Trick or Treat Festival is Thursday, October 26.  This is a FANTASTIC event!  There are activities for the kids to do and safe trick-or-treating.  The teachers all dress up in costumes and hand out treats.  I will be here (wouldn't miss it)!  I hope to see you there!

Picture Re-take Day
Picture re-take day is Friday, October 27.  If you were not able to get pictures taken, or did not care for the picture that was taken, you can get pictures on Friday.

Halloween Party
Our Halloween Party will be on Monday, October 30 from 9:20-10:30.  Parents are welcome to join us.  NO COSTUMES.  We do not allow costumes at school during the day.  We host the Trick-or-Treat Festival so that the children have an opportunity to see each other in costume without disrupting instructional time.  We will have several activities during our Halloween Party and I think the children will have a good time.

Late Start
Wednesday, November 1 is a Late Start Day.  School will start at 11:30 and we will go directly to lunch.  School dismisses at the normal 3:40 time.

Specials
Our specials next week are Art on Monday and PE on Wednesday.
