Classroom update-August 30, 2017

We had a terrific day today!  Our day started when our health clerk, Ana, and the district nurse, Rebecca, visited our classroom to teach us about the importance of washing our hands.  We learned that as we scrub our hands with soap, we should sing either the birthday song, or the alphabet song.  Then we can rinse our hands and use the paper towel to turn off the water.  It was exciting to hear the kids singing and using our new knowledge when we washed up for lunch! We worked at centers in the morning which included learning about a computer keyboard and where the keys are, working on letters and sounds as well as sounding out words, letter recognition, and finding different ways to create a hexagon with pattern blocks.  After lunch we worked in our calendar notebooks and re-read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault.  It is a fun book!  We created a coconut tree like the one in the book and drew letters on it.  During social studies, we talked about the

Classroom News-August 29, 2017

It has been a hectic week.  I apologize for being late posting classroom news.  NO SCHOOL There will be no school on Monday, September 4.  It is Labor Day.  Enjoy the long weekend. Solar Eclipse We enjoyed the opportunity to see the solar eclipse.  We went out shortly after it started and looked at the moon start to cover the sun.  We went outside again at "totality" (which was only about 95%), and again to see the moon moving away from the sun.  As we looked at totality, one of the children said, "Its like looking into outer space!"  It sure is!  Its exactly like looking into outer space.  The comment made me smile.  Another child said she could hardly wait to go home and tell her mom and dad about how she saw the moon bump into the sun.  Well, that's not exactly what I told them, but its certainly the perspective from a kindergartner's point of view.  See pictures at the bottom of the post. Parent Orientation I will be holding 2 Parent Orientation

Happy First Day of Kindergarten!

We had a wonderful first day of kindergarten!  The children learned where to hang their backpacks, we practiced kindergarten coloring, read the book The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn, did a sequencing activity about the story, and did handprints to take home.  The children learned how to use the balls as seats safely.  We went out to the big playground for recess, and enjoyed some free time in the classroom.  It was a BUSY day!  In the future, I would like to include some photos of the children on this blog.  If you do not want your child photographed for this, please let me know.  I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again tomorrow!  Remember that tomorrow is picture day!   If you want to purchase pictures, please send the order form and money tomorrow.  Jenny

Let's Get Started!

It was terrific to meet everyone for assessments!  I am looking forward to a wonderful year together! There are a few things you should know for the first day of school. -Children will line up outside the double doors near the kindergarten rooms (near the small playground).  My class will line up in front of the door on the right.  I will have a sign there. -I will show the children where and how to line up.  We will wave good-bye to parents and come in for the first day of kindergarten!  Fair warning: parents will not be allowed to come in to the building with the children.   This year, our outstanding PTO will be hosting Tea and Tissues in the cafeteria after kindergarten children come inside.  You will walk in through the front door of the school, check in and then are welcome to walk to the cafeteria.  This is not an opportunity for you to be recruited for committees.  It is simply a way to welcome you to Legacy and provide an opportunity to meet other kindergarten parents.

Welcome!

Welcome to Kindergarten!  I am so excited to have your children in my class.  We are going to have a wonderful year! Let me tell you a little about myself.  I have been teaching for 18 years.  I have been teaching kindergarten for most of my career.  Kindergarten is my favorite!  Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and 2 boys (9 and 11 years old).  I also enjoy working with my family's horses. Kindergarten is a busy place, so please visit this blog regularly for the latest news and up to date information.  I do not send a newsletter home since I include all the classroom news on this blog.  Many parents have installed the Blogger app on their phones and Ipads.  This makes checking the blog frequently quick and easy.  You are also welcome to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  The best way to get a hold of me is via email.  My email address is pickett_jenny@svvsd.org.  I will be holding 2 parent orientation meetings.  These meeti
