Classroom News: Friday, October 20

We had a long, busy day in kindergarten today! Today in a Nutshell We worked at Centers this morning.  I finished re-assessing students on letter recognition and letter sounds.  The kids worked on counting with play-doh, read 2 Let's Find Out magazines, practiced writing letters correctly in our Handwriting Without Tears notebooks, and worked in math journals.  After our morning recess, we reviewed our Orton-Gillingham letter cards.  If you do not have a set of these, and would like a set, please email me and let me know.  I would be happy to send a set home to you.  We looked at the sight words we have learned (the, to, a do, no, I, go, so, he, me, she, we, be, of, was, too).  I was happy that most kids seemed to remember them!  We also read Five Little Ghosts Playing Tricks at School.  I asked if we really have ghosts at school, and the kids happily knew that we do not.  I connected this story back to the rhyme Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed since both books followed

Welcome back!  I hope everyone enjoyed some rest and relaxation during our week off.  Remember that we will be at school ALL DAY on Friday, October 20.  Today was a pretty typical day in the classroom.  We worked at centers this morning.  Children worked with Halloween Number puzzles at the reading table because I was reassessing students on their letter recognition and letter sounds.  They have made some terrific progress!  The children also worked on Lexia Core 5 on the ipads.  I'm looking into ways for you to access this program at home.  Stay tuned.  They worked with Ms. Renee on Handwriting Without Tears, and learned how to count syllables in words!  After lunch we read Inside a House That is Haunted by Alyssa Satin Capucilli.  I promise that none of the books I read to children during Halloween season is frightening.  If your child feels uneasy with a book we read, please encourage them to let me know and I will either stop reading the book, or allow them to go to a qui

Today was a very exciting day!  It was APPLESAUCE DAY!  We made applesauce at the reading center.  Each child had the opportunity to peel and core an apple (with a safe peeler/corer).  We tasted each apple as we put it in the crock pot.  Then we added brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and water.  It cooked in the classroom all day long.  Oh!  The wonderful smell!  After lunch, each child was given a cup with a morsel from 4 different apples (red delicious, golden delicious, gala, and granny smith apples)  They tasted each apple and decided which they liked best.  Then we created a graph with the information.  We learned that our class likes red delicious apples best, granny smith apples next, then gala apples, and we like the golden delicious apples the least.  At the end of the day, we each got a small cup with applesauce in it.  It was delicious!   Most of the children ate it up.  In case you would like to make it at home (its super easy), I've included the recipe.  8 medium

Just a friendly reminder that we have a crazy schedule for the next couple of weeks.  NO SCHOOL: Friday, October 13 and Monday, October 16 At school ALL DAY on Friday, October 20 Today we got more in to our Apple Unit.  We made a Circle Map that included everything we know about Apples.  From there, we made an apple page that completed the sentence Apples Are...  I've included a picture of the Circle Map at the bottom of this post.  We also watched a video of a Dr. Seuss book being read aloud.  It was 10 Apples Up On Top.  After that, we made our faces and put 10 apples with numbers on them on our heads.  These turned out great! Some groups are seeing a change in their Orton-Gillingham reading groups.  We have focused on letters, keywords, and letter sounds, but it is time for some groups to move on.  We are working quite a bit on handwriting and forming letters correctly, we are working on what sound we hear at the beginning of a word, the end of a word, and the middle of a

Happy Friday! Our schedule for the next couple of weeks is a little crazy.  Please note the schedule changes. Friday, October 13-No School Monday, October 16-No School Friday, October 20-SCHOOL ALL DAY Today, the Storyteller came for a visit and told a couple of Halloween stories.  The stories were fun to listen to!  Ask your child if they can retell the story to you. At one of our centers today, we made cards for one of the hospitals in Las Vegas.  I did not talk much about the incident that happened there.  I simply told students that in another state, something happened and a lot of people got hurt.  I told them that we would make cards for the doctors and nurses that helped those people to say Thank You for all their hard work.   The cards are beautiful and I will mail them either this afternoon or tomorrow.  I am confident that the cards your children made will bring a smile to the faces of the doctors and nurses in Las Vegas.  Be proud!
