Classroom News-September 27, 2017

The weather on Friday was perfect for the FUNd Run!  The kids had a great time and did a terrific job!  I will include pictures at the bottom of this post.  Thank you to everyone for coming to your parent-teacher conferences.  I have enjoyed meeting with you and talking about the terrific progress your child is making! Today we will see Ronald McDonald in the gym for an assembly about how to be good community members (which coincides with the community unit we are working on right now).  Take Home Books started going home on Friday.  The children are doing some great reading already!  You can send the books back whenever you are done with them (you don't have to wait until Friday to send them back).  When the books come back, we will send a new one home.  I am hoping to send the first games home today.  Keep your fingers crossed! Next Wednesday (October 4) is a Late Start Day.  School will start at 11:30 and we will immediately go to lunch.  We will dismiss at the usual t

Conferences Next week are parent-teacher conferences.  On Monday, I sent home a notice letting you know when your conference is scheduled.  If that time does not fit your schedule, please let me know.  I have other times available.  Originally I was planning to hold conferences on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Since then, I found out that my son's conferences are on Tuesday, so I've had to change my conferences to Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  I'm sorry if this has caused any inconvenience.  I appreciate your flexibility.  FUNd Run! The FUNd Run is this Friday, September 22 at 9:10 am.  Please collect pledges for your child's participation in this event.  They do events like this to avoid catalog sales.  Please bring water bottles, comfortable shoes, and weather appropriate clothing for the event.  Birthday Breakfast We will have our first Birthday Breakfast next Friday at 9:15.  We are celebrating Abby's birthday! Games and Books I will send home Ta

We started our morning with centers.  As always, students came to the reading center to practice letters and letter sounds.  Some groups are ready to move on to letter blends!  We listened to Clark the Shark at the listening center, sorted dominos depending on the number of dots on them, and put numbers in order on a number line on the ipads.  The ipad activity was an assessment. After recess, we went to the library to check out books.  Books are checked out for one week.  In order to check a new book out, the old one must be returned.  Our library day will always be Monday.  This afternoon, we worked in our calendar notebooks and started Writer's Workshop.  This is a new routine and a new skill, but the children did a terrific job!  After a short recess, we went to music class with Mr. Sutton.  When we came back to the classroom, we re-read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?.  Then we did a Bridge Map that focuses on analogies.  Brown is to bear as red is to bird.  The c

Just a reminder that today at 3:45 I am holding a parent orientation.  This is not like the parent orientation you went to on the assessment day.  This orientation will be about my classroom, specifically.  I look forward to seeing you there! Today we read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?.  This is a fun, repetitive book!  After recreating the book in the pocket chart, we drew about our favorite animal in the book.  We also read Me First by Helen Lester.  It is about Pinkerton Pig who always wants to be first.  At the bottom of this post is the Bubble Map we created about Pinkerton Pig. Next week we will go to Music on Monday and Computer Lab on Wednesday. I have changed my conference schedule.  I had planned to be available on Monday, September 25, Tuesday, September 26, and Wednesday, September 27.  I have had to cancel conferences on Tuesday and move them to Thursday of that week.  If you signed up for Tuesday and can not make it on Thursday instead, please let me kn

Friendly Reminder

A few friendly reminders: Wednesday, September 6 is a Late Start Day.  School will start at 11:30.  We will go straight to lunch.  Dismissal will be at 3:40. Immediately after school (3:45) on Wednesday, September 6 and Friday, September 8, I am hosting a Parent Orientation.  This is an important opportunity to learn about the classroom and learning we will be doing this year.  The information covered in this Orientation is not the information you got on the assessment day.  Please plan to come to one of the Orientations. Friday, September 8 is a FULL DAY for us.  We have made this a full day to make up for time lost on the holiday.
